These writings date back to the 1980s, when I discovered the world of film and animation fandom. I've had many hobbies in my life, and it seemed as though I took on a new hobby every few years or so. As I grew up, my geek hobbies seemed to begin with J.R.R. Tolkien fanaticism, the first geek hobby I acquired myself. (I'd previously enjoyed collecting coins, but I'd picked that up from my parents.) I eventually progessed from Tolkien geek, to Dungeons & Dragons geek (ADVANCED Dungeons & Dragons!), to comic book geek...then, I saw Who Framed Roger Rabbit. The movie opened my eyes to an entirely new world of geekdom! For a couple of years I became an animation geek...then moved on to a movie and film geek. This lasted for several years, and I had a long phase of Internet geekness after that. Now, in the year 2025 as I write this, I'm a cooking geek.
I wrote a number of amateur movie reviews in the days when Usenet was peaking and the Internet was approaching the mainstream. A number of these reviews are still stored in the Internet Movie Database and the archives of the Usenet newsgroup rec.arts.movies.reviews.
Many Web sites out there include listings of various movie reviews, imitating the style of Roger Ebert or Leonard Maltin, or occasionally that of Pauline Kael. I could never hope to compete with such dedicated online movie critics as James Berardinelli or Steve Rhodes (and his son); so, I offer you a selection of movies that I have found particularly impressive over the years. You've probably heard of most of these films – but if you haven't, or if you've heard of them but never seen them, you owe it to yourself to seek them out and give them a try. You won't regret it.
Bulldada Film and Video Reviews
What is bulldada? This term comes from the Church of the SubGenius, and it can be (vaguely) defined as finding entertainment and enjoyment in the works of others -- especially if those works are so outrageous, memorable, awful, wonderful, or blatantly offensive. You can't really describe bulldada until you experience it yourself. I hope these reviews, written over the the past four decades, offer a hint of what bulldada can mean...and I especially hope they inspire you to go out and discover bulldada for yourself.
